Older homes are everywhere in our service area. According to U.S. Census figures, the median home in Baltimore was built in 1947, in Silver Spring in 1964 and in Hyattsville in 1966 — and 60% of homes in Annapolis predate 1980. These homes are beautiful, and they need a gentler hand.

Original hardwood

Use a barely damp microfiber mop and a pH-neutral cleaner. Never flood old floors or use steam — water finds its way into gaps between boards. Vacuum with a soft brush head first so grit doesn't scratch the finish.

Plaster walls

Plaster is durable but porous. Dust it with a dry microfiber cloth and spot-clean marks with a soft sponge and mild soap, wringing it nearly dry. Avoid magic erasers on painted plaster — they remove paint along with the mark.

Radiators and vents

Cast-iron radiators collect dust between the fins that blows around when the heat comes on. A radiator brush or a long, thin vacuum attachment gets most of it out; clean them before heating season.

Trim, windows and built-ins

Detailed trim, window sashes and original built-ins hold dust in every groove. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Window tracks in older homes are often deep — a crevice tool and a dry brush work best.

This is exactly what a deep clean covers. We clean older homes across Baltimore, Annapolis, Hyattsville and Silver Spring every week.
